Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel

The Vatican Museums were founded in 16th Century and it’s currently the 4th most visited art museum in the World. In fact, inside you can find some of the best Renaissance masterpieces. There are 54 galleries in total and the very last one is the Sistine Chapel. You don’t need to visit all of them, plan ahead what you want to see. Here are the must-see galleries.
  1. The Pinacoteca. Here you can see paintings going from the Medieval period to the 19th Century. Some of the artists exposed here are great masters such as Giotto, Leonardo Da Vinci, Raffaello, Il Perugino and Caravaggio.
  2. The Pio-Clementino Museum. Here you can find Roman and Greek masterpieces. The three most famous sculptures you can’t really miss are: the Apollo Belvedere, the Laocoon sculpted group and Perseus with the head of Medusa.
  3. Gregorian Egyptian Museum. Don’t miss the opportunity to see two real mummies. It’s really impressive how the two corpse are perfectly preserved to these days.
  4. The Gallery of Geographic Maps. This is for sure one of the most suggestive rooms in the Vatican Museums. The roof and the walls are extremely colorful and you can enjoy the maps of the ancient Italian ports.
  5. The Pavillion of the Coaches. If you ever dreamt of being a royal, than you should definitely visit this room. Here you can see the coaches used by different popes. They are incredibly luxurious and worth a visit!
  6. Raphael’s Rooms. These are without doubt one of the main attractions in the Vatican Museums. The frescoes here painted by Raffaello are masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. The most famous one is the School of Athens.
  7. The Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo Buonarroti spent 10 years of his life to complete this incredible masterpiece now part of the Vatican Museums. The paintings were completed in 1512. The Sistine Chapel will fill your eyes with true beauty.
