The Altar of the Fatherland (Altare della Patria in Italian), also known as vittorio Emanuele II Monument (Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II in Italian), was inaugurated in 1911 and it’s dedicated to the first king of unified Italy. The huge monument is 135 meters wide and 70 meters high, all carved in white marble. Due to its look, locals call Altare della Patria different names, like the typewriters, the wedding cake, and the dentures. The entrance to the monument is free of charge and you can climb the stairs until the very top to enjoy the different parts of this building. If you’d like to go up to the panoramic terrace, instead, you need to book the ticket. The view from there is simply breathtaking.
