Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Italy

Santa Maria Novella is a Dominican church situated in Florence and designed in a Gothic-style aesthetic. Sisto and Ristoro, two Dominican brothers, planned the construction of Santa Maria Novella. They completed it in 1350.

Leon Battista Alberti designed the upper part and facade in 1470. Therefore, the facade is not merely the oldest of all the churches in Florence. It’s also the only church that has its original facade still in place today.

Santa Maria Novella houses frescoes that were painted on the interior walls of the church by Italian masters of Gothic and early Renaissance painters. Here you can find masterpieces by Masaccio, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Giotto, Filippino Lippi,  and Ghirlandaio, to name a few. That’s why, it’s really worth a visit.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Remember to dress properly, otherwise you can’t enter the church.
